Oracle has reportedly slashed the jobs of several developers from the Oracle Commerce and Commerce Cloud development teams. According to various social-media posts, the Company’s commercial cloud service had to take this extreme step in the face of dipping market share.

The layoffs have naturally sent a wave of insecurity through the remaining employees working on the platform, which is still being developed.

The American multinational computer technology platform had shifted to modern Cloud-based offerings, and after acquiring ATG— the e-commerce tech expert— it had begun to focus on its Commerce Cloud platform to facilitate the building of online retail. However, the attempt had not given results as expected.

Oracle witnessed many layoffs throughout 2019 in its cloud division. However, at the time, it was claimed to be part of a normal restructuring process. By October 2019 the Company had announced its decision to hire thousands in its software development, cloud operations, and business operations. It had revealed its intentions to make a mark in the infrastructure-as-a-service market.

The Company, which had four cloud regions up until 2018, had announced its ambitious plans to expand to 36 regions. It had revealed that it was ready to hire new engineers and business operations personnel for its offices in Seattle, San Francisco, and India. It had shared its intention to invest more in real estate to accommodate the new hires. Almost two years later, it looks like its Cloud developers are readying to hunt for jobs.
